Restoration of Avarga Toson Lake

Exploration research and project design work for "Restoration of Avarga Toson Lake, which is of special therapeutic value in Delgerkhaan Sum area of Khentii Province" is underway. The work is being carried out by "Prestige Engineering" on the order of "Executive Agency of the Government of Mongolia, Water Department". "Institute of Chemistry and Chemical Technology of the Academy of Sciences" and about 20 consultants are working as subcontractors. Avarga Toson Lake is located 232 km from Ulaanbaatar city, 124 km from Chinggis city, 6 km from the center of Delgerhaan Sum, Khentii Province, at an altitude of 1300 m above sea level, and belongs to the sub-basin of the Avarga River. The waters of the Avarga toson lake have been scientifically studied since the 1950s. Since 1971, as a result of determining the physical and chemical properties, gas composition, and biologically active components of the lake water, it has been determined that it is a mineral lake with therapeutic mud, so it is still used in spas for therapeutic purposes. In recent years, the number of vacationers has increased, but the water level of the Avarga toson lake has decreased, the level of pollution has increased, and it is close to losing its therapeutic quality. According to measurements from 1970 to 2022, the volume of water in Avarga toson lake has decreased by 60%. It can be seen from the research results of this project that it is affected by global climate change and human activities. Based on the results of the project's research work, a set of works are being carried out to protect the Avarga toson lake from pollution and drying, to restore the natural appearance of the lake, and to maintain the balance of the ecosystem. With the successful implementation of the project, the lake and the area around the lake will be restored to a certain extent, and the lake water will be able to purify itself through natural water circulation and will be restored. As a result, the restored ecosystem has a very important nature conservation role, such as maintaining biodiversity and maintaining water quality. In addition, this wonderful natural resource can be used in treatment for a long time. Also, by combining medical tourism with natural and historical tourism in an ecologically friendly manner, it will greatly contribute to the current and future social and economic development of the local area.
